Much of the knowledge on Movement Builders has come from Shane Walton’s experience building powerful movements.
Leading a Legislative Movement (2007 - 2008)
Shane Walton built the Desert and Mountain Wilderness Campaign in southern California. This coalition of local businesses, nonprofits, and individuals fought for and gained the endorsement of 14 local government bodies, 8 local chambers of commerce, and numerous elected officials including county supervisors and state legislators. This overwhelming local movement led Congresswoman Mary Bono (R-CA), Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to sponsor legislation to permanently protect more than 200,000 acres of wild lands and more than 30 miles of wild rivers.
Leading an Environmental Movement (2005 - 2006)
With the California Wild Heritage Campaign, a statewide coalition working for the protection of California’s wild lands and rivers, Shane Walton built a powerful environmental movement in the Eastern Sierra. His recruited the support of more than 275 businesses, packing local government meetings and inspiring conservative Congressman Buck McKeon (R-CA) to introduce legislation to permanently protect more than 40,000 acres of wilderness and over 24 miles of wild river.
Leading a Social Justice Movement (2004 - 2005)
Working with the Association of Communities Organized for Reform Now — the nation’s largest grassroots community organization of low and moderate-income people — Shane Walton built a social justice movement in Phoenix, AZ. He launched the organization’s political advocacy arm in Phoenix, as well as leading individual campaigns for public safety and health.
Professorship (2001 - 2004)
Shane Walton taught political science and sociology at universities in North America, Europe, and Asia. His graduate and undergraduate level courses included cultural economics, political philosophy and, of course, the nature of social movements.
